Tips to Attacking Anxiety and Depression
While anxiety may be the body’s normal response to a frightening or potentially dangerous situation, there are times when ones anxiety can spiral out of control. If you find yourself becoming anxious for no reason, or you experience fear to everyday situations then you may be suffering from some form of anxiety disorder. While it may be possible for symptoms to possibly go away on their own, many require the help of a trained professional in order to treat their anxiety. If left untreated, anxiety can turn into depression. There have even been occasions where sufferers have sought treatments for depression only to find out that the underlying cause for their depression was an anxiety disorder that had either never been diagnosed or was not properly treated.
When it comes to determining whether or not treatments for depression are required, there are some key symptoms that you need to be on the lookout for. They are:
Feeling like you are overwhelmed Experiencing a loss of hope for the future A feeling of irritability Constant fatigue Experiencing a change in appetite Experience a change in sleeping patterns Suffering from poor concentration Experiencing a reduction in sexual interest or desire Experiencing some form of suicidal thoughts
Those suffering from some form of panic and anxiety can experience a feeling of helplessness and despair. They may even feel guilty and ashamed of the effect that their anxiety is having on their family and friends. Things that they once enjoyed are now avoided due to the fear and dread that they may potentially have another attack. This may cause the sufferer to place more of the burden for daily tasks on their significant other simply because they feel like they are worthless and cannot possibly do things on their own which is why learning how to stop depression is so very important.
Like most disorders, depression can become quite disabling. Those who suffer from depression may find themselves lacking the motivation and energy required to get things done. They may also lose interest in completing daily activities and many suffer from some form of disturbed sleeping pattern, making the sufferer feel worse instead of better about their current situation. At its worst, depression can cause the sufferer to be unable to care for themselves or their family and can make someone much less likely to seek out ways to manage their anxiety. This is why it is so important to seek treatment of depression, because if left alone the symptoms may only get worse instead of better.
Many people choose to not see a professional about their anxiety disorder simply because they are embarrassed, or for fear that they may be judged based on their inability to take control of their anxiety on their own. If treatment is not sought, depression will take its hold, forcing the sufferer to seek treatment of depression before the symptoms are beyond their control. In recent years it has actually become socially acceptable to admit that you are depressed, and while that may come as a shock to some, this blasé attitude about this disorder can help sufferers seek treatment of depression simply because they no longer need to fear the stigma that was once attached to it. In the near future anxiety disorders may soon be seen in the same light making it easier for sufferers to seek treatment before depression takes its hold.
Another disorder created by the non-treatment of anxiety is agoraphobia. Once known as the fear of the marketplace or fear of open spaces, agoraphobia is now more commonly known as a form of avoidance of particular locations due to the sufferer’s fear of possibly having anxiety or a panic attack. Without some form of agoraphobia treatment, avoidance is the preferred method for avoiding experiencing potentially distressing symptoms. While avoiding the situation may deliver short term benefits, over time this behavior can turn into agoraphobia which prevents many from being able to lead a normal life.
The first time someone experiences an attack, most are usually caught by surprise and will try to find a way to make sense of exactly what happened. Many assume that where ever they were, or whatever they were doing is what caused the response and it is this incorrect assumption that causes the person to avoid similar situations for fear that it will elicit the same response.
